How to Use the Chinese Zodiac Calculator

Finding your Chinese zodiac animal takes just a few seconds, but getting an accurate result requires more than just your birth year. The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, meaning the new year begins on a different date each year (typically between January 21 and February 20). If you were born in January or February, your zodiac animal may actually belong to the previous year.

  1. Enter your birth year. Type the four-digit year you were born (1900 to 2100).
  2. Select your birth month. Choose the month from the dropdown.
  3. Enter your birth day. Type the day of the month.
  4. View your results. Your Chinese zodiac animal appears instantly, along with your element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water), yin-yang polarity, and personality traits.

This calculator uses a lookup table of actual Lunar New Year dates from 1900 to 2030 to determine your correct Chinese zodiac year. For births outside that range, the standard year-based calculation is used.

About the Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese zodiac (Shengxiao) is a repeating 12-year cycle where each year is represented by an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Combined with five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and yin-yang polarity, the full cycle takes 60 years to complete. Each combination of animal, element, and polarity produces a unique personality profile rooted in thousands of years of Chinese astrological tradition. The system is used across East Asia for personality analysis, compatibility matching, and choosing auspicious dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my birth month matter for Chinese zodiac?

The Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) falls on a different date each year, typically between January 21 and February 20. If you were born in January or early February, you might actually fall under the previous year's zodiac animal. For example, someone born on January 25, 2020 is a Pig (2019), not a Rat (2020), because Lunar New Year 2020 did not start until January 25. This calculator checks the exact Lunar New Year date for your birth year to give you the correct animal.

What are the five elements in Chinese astrology?

The five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each element cycles over a 10-year period (two consecutive years per element). Your element adds a layer of personality traits on top of your zodiac animal. For example, a Metal Dragon differs from a Water Dragon. Metal is associated with determination and rigidity, Water with flexibility and intuition, Wood with growth and creativity, Fire with passion and energy, and Earth with stability and practicality.

What is the difference between yin and yang years?

In Chinese astrology, even-numbered years are Yang (active, outward, assertive) and odd-numbered years are Yin (receptive, inward, reflective). This polarity modifies the expression of your zodiac animal. A Yang Tiger, for instance, may express confidence more outwardly, while a Yin Tiger may channel that same strength in a quieter, more strategic way.

How is the Chinese zodiac different from Western astrology?

Western astrology assigns a sign based on your birth month (the sun's position among constellations), cycling every 12 months. The Chinese zodiac assigns an animal based on your birth year, cycling every 12 years. Western astrology uses four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water), while Chinese astrology uses five (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). Both systems are used for personality analysis, but they approach it from completely different traditions and timeframes.
