Pythagorean numerology assigns a number 1-9 to each letter of the alphabet. By reducing the sum of letter values in your name, you reveal three core numbers that describe different aspects of your personality and life purpose.
- Enter your full birth name. Use the name given to you at birth (first, middle, and last). Married names and nicknames carry different energy and are not used for the core calculation.
- View your three numbers. The Expression Number (all letters) reveals your natural talents and abilities. The Soul Urge Number (vowels only) reveals your inner desires and motivations. The Personality Number (consonants only) reveals how others perceive you.
- Read the letter breakdown. See the numerical value assigned to each letter in your name, with vowels and consonants color-coded.
Master numbers (11, 22, 33) are never reduced further and carry amplified meaning. If your name reduces to one of these, you carry a special spiritual significance.
About Pythagorean Name Numerology
Pythagorean numerology maps each letter to a number: A=1, B=2, C=3... I=9, J=1, K=2, and so on. The system originated with the Greek mathematician Pythagoras, who believed that numbers are the fundamental building blocks of reality. In name numerology, vowels (A, E, I, O, U) represent the inner self (Soul Urge), consonants represent the outer self (Personality), and the total of all letters represents your full potential (Expression). Y is treated as a consonant in this system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use my birth name or current name?
Use your full name as given at birth for the core numerology calculation. This includes your first, middle, and last name. If you have changed your name through marriage, adoption, or personal choice, your new name carries its own numerological energy, but it is considered a secondary influence layered on top of your birth name vibration.
What is a master number?
Master numbers are 11, 22, and 33. They are never reduced to single digits because they carry intensified energy. 11 represents heightened intuition and spiritual insight. 22 represents the ability to turn grand visions into reality. 33 represents selfless devotion and the desire to uplift humanity. Not everyone has a master number in their chart.
Is Y a vowel or consonant in numerology?
In Pythagorean numerology, Y is treated as a consonant. Some numerologists make exceptions when Y acts as the only vowel sound in a syllable (as in "Lynn" or "Bryn"), but the standard Pythagorean method counts A, E, I, O, and U as vowels and all other letters as consonants. This calculator follows the standard method.
What is the difference between Expression, Soul Urge, and Personality numbers?
The Expression Number (all letters) describes your overall abilities, talents, and potential. The Soul Urge Number (vowels only) describes your inner desires, dreams, and what truly motivates you. The Personality Number (consonants only) describes how others perceive you and the impression you make. Together, these three numbers paint a complete picture of your numerological identity.
