How to Use the Temperature Converter

This converter translates temperatures between the three most common scales: Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin. Results update as you type.

  1. Enter a temperature value. Type any number into the temperature field. Negative values and decimals are both supported.
  2. Choose the source unit. Select Fahrenheit, Celsius, or Kelvin from the "From" dropdown. Most US weather reports use Fahrenheit, while most of the world uses Celsius. Kelvin is used in science.
  3. Choose the target unit. Select the unit you want to convert to from the "To" dropdown. Use the swap button between the dropdowns to quickly reverse the conversion direction.
  4. Read the result. The converted value appears instantly along with the formula used. A reference table below shows common temperature benchmarks for context.

About Temperature Conversion

Fahrenheit and Celsius are the two scales used in everyday life. Fahrenheit is the standard in the United States and a few other countries, while Celsius is used almost everywhere else. The two scales differ in both their zero points and their degree sizes: one Celsius degree is 1.8 times larger than one Fahrenheit degree.

Kelvin is the SI unit of thermodynamic temperature. It uses the same degree size as Celsius but starts at absolute zero, the theoretical point where all molecular motion stops. This makes Kelvin essential in physics, chemistry, and engineering calculations where negative temperatures would cause errors in formulas.

The formulas are straightforward. To go from Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. To go from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5, then add 32. To go from Celsius to Kelvin, simply add 273.15.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 0 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?

0 degrees Celsius equals 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the freezing point of water at standard atmospheric pressure.

What is 72 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?

72 degrees Fahrenheit equals approximately 22.2 degrees Celsius. This is a common indoor room temperature setting in the United States.

At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius equal?

Fahrenheit and Celsius are equal at -40 degrees. At that point, -40 degrees F equals exactly -40 degrees C. This is the only temperature where both scales intersect.

Why is Kelvin used in science instead of Celsius?

Kelvin starts at absolute zero, which means it has no negative values. Many physics and chemistry equations, such as the ideal gas law, require an absolute temperature scale to produce correct results. Using Celsius or Fahrenheit in those formulas would give wrong answers because their zero points are arbitrary.
