How to Use Sequence Puzzles

  1. Choose a type. "Number Sequences" shows a series of numbers with a hidden pattern. "Shape Sequences" uses geometric shapes arranged in a repeating or growing pattern.
  2. Choose a difficulty. Easy uses simple addition or subtraction patterns. Medium adds geometric and alternating patterns. Hard includes Fibonacci-like sequences, square numbers, and complex shape rules.
  3. Click "New Puzzle" to generate a fresh sequence.
  4. Study the pattern. Five terms are shown. Look at how each term relates to the one before it. Is it adding the same number? Multiplying? Alternating?
  5. Enter your answer. For number sequences, type the next number and click "Check." For shape sequences, click the shape you think comes next from the multiple-choice options.
  6. Print worksheets. Click "Print Worksheet" to generate 10 puzzles on one page. "Print with Answers" includes the answer key with explanations of each pattern rule.

About Sequence Puzzles

Sequence puzzles (also called pattern recognition or series completion) are a cornerstone of mathematical thinking. They appear on standardized tests, in classroom curricula, and in cognitive assessments. By studying a series of values and identifying the underlying rule, children develop algebraic thinking skills long before they encounter formal algebra.

This tool covers several types of sequences: arithmetic (add or subtract a constant), geometric (multiply by a constant), Fibonacci-like (each term is the sum of the two before it), square numbers, triangular numbers, and shape patterns with repeating or growing rules. All puzzles are generated in the browser with no external data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is Sequence Puzzles designed for?

Sequence Puzzles is designed for children ages 8 through 12. Easy mode with simple addition patterns works for 8-year-olds. Hard mode with Fibonacci and square numbers provides a challenge for older children. Adults preparing for aptitude tests can also benefit.

Is this safe for kids?

Yes. All sequences are generated by a deterministic algorithm running entirely in your browser. No external data, no user-generated content, and no chat features. Nothing is uploaded or shared.

What types of number patterns are included?

Easy mode has arithmetic sequences (adding or subtracting a constant). Medium adds geometric sequences (multiplying by a constant), square numbers, and alternating patterns. Hard adds Fibonacci-like sequences, triangular numbers, and powers of 2.

Can I print worksheets for a classroom?

Yes. Click "Print Worksheet" to generate 10 sequence puzzles on one page with blank spaces for answers. Click "Print with Answers" to include the answer key with the pattern rule explained for each puzzle. Generate new sets by clicking "New Puzzle" first.
