- Enter your words and clues. Type each entry on its own line using the format WORD: clue text. For example: ELEPHANT: Largest land animal. Use 8 to 15 words for best results. Single-word entries without a colon will be placed with a blank clue.
- Choose a grid size. A 15x15 grid (the default) works well for 8 to 12 words. Use a larger grid for more words, or a smaller one for shorter puzzles aimed at younger solvers.
- Customize the look. Add an optional title and pick a border theme to match the occasion: Minimal, Classic, Floral, Holiday, Ocean, Pastel, or Educational.
- Generate. Click "Generate Crossword" to build your puzzle. The algorithm places the longest words first and maximizes intersections between words. Click again for a different arrangement.
- Download. The ZIP download includes both a blank puzzle and an answer key, in US Letter and A4 PDF formats at 300 DPI, ready to print.
About the Crossword Puzzle Generator
This tool builds a standard American-style crossword grid from any list of words and clues you provide. Words are placed starting with the longest to maximize the number of intersections. The placement algorithm scores candidate positions by the number of crossing letters and proximity to the center of the grid, creating a compact, well-connected puzzle.
Cells are numbered automatically using standard crossword rules: a cell gets a number when it begins an Across or Down word. The numbered clue lists are printed below the grid in two columns, one for Across and one for Down.
All generation happens in your browser. Your words and clues are never uploaded to any server. The puzzles you create are yours to print, share, or sell.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many words can I use in a crossword?
A 15x15 grid typically fits 8 to 14 words depending on their lengths. Longer words must share letters with shorter ones, so the actual count depends on how well the words intersect. If a word cannot be placed, it will be listed below the puzzle as unplaced. Try a larger grid or swap out very short or very long words to improve placement.
Why are some of my words missing from the puzzle?
Each word must share at least one letter with an already-placed word to be added to the grid. If there are no valid crossing points, or if the grid would become too crowded, the word is skipped and listed as unplaced. To fix this, use a larger grid size, add words that share more letters with your existing list, or click Generate again to try a different seed arrangement.
Can I use these crosswords commercially?
Yes. The puzzles you generate are yours to use however you like, including selling on Etsy, Amazon KDP, or using in educational materials and worksheets. The small "foundthetool.com" credit in the footer can be cropped if needed before publishing.
