How to Use Kids Sudoku

  1. Choose your settings. Pick a grid size (4x4 for beginners, 6x6 for a bigger challenge), a mode (numbers or pictures), and a difficulty level. Easy puzzles have lots of clues already filled in.
  2. Generate a puzzle. Click "New Puzzle" to create a fresh sudoku board. Every puzzle has exactly one solution.
  3. Fill in the blanks. Click or tap an empty cell to select it, then type a number or tap a picture from the picker below the grid. Each row, column, and outlined box must contain every number (or picture) exactly once.
  4. Watch for red highlights. If you place a number that conflicts with another cell in the same row, column, or box, both cells turn red. Fix the conflict before moving on.
  5. Complete the puzzle. When every cell is correctly filled, you will see a "Puzzle Complete!" message. Try a harder difficulty or larger grid next.

Use the Print buttons to create a paper version. "Print with Solution" adds the answer on a second page, which is handy for teachers and parents checking work.

About Kids Sudoku

Sudoku is a logic puzzle that teaches pattern recognition, elimination, and spatial reasoning. Standard sudoku uses a 9x9 grid, which can be overwhelming for young children. Kids Sudoku simplifies the concept with smaller grids: 4x4 (with 2x2 boxes) and 6x6 (with 2x3 boxes). The rules stay the same. Every row, every column, and every outlined box must contain each number exactly once.

Picture mode replaces digits with simple icons (stars, hearts, flowers, fish, butterflies, and apples) so that children who are still learning their numbers can enjoy the same logical challenge. The puzzles are generated with a guaranteed unique solution, so there is always one correct answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is Kids Sudoku designed for?

Kids Sudoku is designed for children ages 5 through 8. The 4x4 Easy grid is a great starting point for five-year-olds, while the 6x6 Hard grid challenges confident eight-year-olds. Adults new to sudoku can also use the 4x4 grid to learn the rules before moving to full-size 9x9 puzzles.

Is this safe for kids?

Yes. Every image comes from a fixed library of hand-picked shapes and icons. No AI-generated content is used. The puzzles are created with deterministic algorithms running entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared. There are no external data feeds, no user-generated content, and no chat features. Parents and teachers can let children play with complete confidence.

Does every puzzle have exactly one solution?

Yes. The generator removes cells one at a time and checks that the puzzle still has a unique solution after each removal. If removing a cell would create multiple valid solutions, that cell stays filled. This guarantees that every puzzle can be solved with logic alone.

Can I print the puzzles for classroom use?

Yes. Click "Print Puzzle" for a clean printable version with empty cells for students to fill in by hand. Click "Print with Solution" to get the puzzle on one page and the completed answer on the next. Generate as many different puzzles as you need by clicking "New Puzzle" each time.
