How to Use Number Cross

  1. Choose a difficulty. Easy uses addition only. Medium adds subtraction. Hard includes multiplication. Start with Easy to learn the format.
  2. Click "New Puzzle" to generate a fresh crossword grid with math equation clues.
  3. Read the clues. Each clue is a math equation with one missing number, shown as "?". For example, "3 + ? = 7" means the answer is 4. Across clues fill left-to-right, down clues fill top-to-bottom.
  4. Click a blank cell and type the digit (1-9) you think belongs there. Where clues intersect, the digit must be correct for both the across and down equations.
  5. Complete the grid. When every blank cell has the correct digit, you will see a congratulations message.

Use the Print buttons to create paper worksheets. "Print with Solution" includes the completed grid on a separate page.

About Number Cross

Number Cross combines the grid-based logic of crossword puzzles with arithmetic practice. Instead of word clues, each entry has a math equation with one unknown digit. The grid structure means that digits at intersection points must satisfy both the across and the down clue, adding an extra layer of deduction.

This type of puzzle strengthens mental math, logical reasoning, and attention to detail. It is particularly useful for children who enjoy both math and word puzzles. All puzzles are generated algorithmically in your browser with no external data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is Number Cross designed for?

Number Cross is designed for children ages 8 through 12. Easy mode (addition only) works well for 8-year-olds learning basic addition facts. Hard mode (with multiplication) challenges older children and can even be enjoyable for adults.

Is this safe for kids?

Yes. All puzzles are generated by a deterministic algorithm running entirely in your browser. No external data, no user-generated content, and no chat features. Nothing is uploaded or shared.

How does the crossword format work with numbers?

Each white cell in the grid holds a single digit (1-9). Black cells separate the entries. Across clues give equations whose answers fill cells left to right. Down clues fill cells top to bottom. Where an across entry and a down entry share a cell, the digit must be correct for both equations.

Can I print these for classroom use?

Yes. Click "Print Puzzle" for a clean worksheet with the empty grid and clue list. Click "Print with Solution" to include the answer key. Generate as many unique puzzles as you need by clicking "New Puzzle."
