- Choose how many items. Select 3 items for the easiest puzzles or up to 6 for a bigger challenge. Younger children should start with 3.
- Start a puzzle. Click "New Puzzle" and a set of objects will appear in random order at the top. Each object is the same shape but drawn at a different size.
- Drag from smallest to largest. Below the objects you will see numbered slots from 1 (smallest) to N (largest). Drag each object into the slot you think is correct. If you place one correctly, it snaps into place. If wrong, it bounces back so you can try again.
- Complete the puzzle. Once every object is in the right slot, you will see a "Great job!" message and your score increases. Click "Next Puzzle" for a new round with a different shape.
You can print a worksheet version by clicking "Print Worksheet." The printed page shows the objects in random order with numbered blank boxes. Use "Print with Answers" to get an answer key for teachers and parents.
About Size Ordering
Size ordering, also called seriation, is a foundational math skill for young children. By comparing objects and arranging them from smallest to largest, children practice visual estimation, develop vocabulary like "bigger," "smaller," and "medium," and build the logical thinking that underpins number sense. Research shows that seriation ability in preschool is a strong predictor of later mathematical achievement.
This game uses icons drawn from a fixed sprite library of simple shapes, animals, and everyday objects. No AI is used. Every image is generated from hand-picked drawing functions. The game runs entirely in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age is Size Ordering suitable for?
The game is designed for children ages 3 through 5. Start with 3 items for three-year-olds. Four or five items work well for four-year-olds, and six items provide a good challenge for older preschoolers and kindergartners.
Is this safe for kids?
Yes. Every image is generated from a fixed library of hand-picked shapes and icons. No AI is used. The game cannot display anything outside this curated set of simple shapes, cartoon animals, and everyday objects. There are no external data feeds, no user-generated content, and no chat features.
Does the game work on phones and tablets?
Yes. The game supports both mouse drag and touch drag. Objects are large enough for small fingers to grab, and the layout adjusts to fit phones, tablets, and desktop screens.
How are the sizes determined?
Each puzzle picks one type of object and renders it at evenly spaced sizes. For example, with 4 items the sizes might be 30px, 55px, 80px, and 105px. The differences are large enough for young children to distinguish clearly.
