- Choose your content. Select from uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers 0-9, shapes, or enter your own custom text. Each option generates age-appropriate tracing outlines.
- Set lines per page. Choose 4 lines for very young children who need large practice areas, 6 lines for a balanced layout, or 8 lines for older preschoolers who are ready for smaller writing.
- Pick a letter size. Large is best for children just starting to hold a pencil. Medium works well for kids who already have some pencil control.
- Click Generate. A new tracing sheet appears instantly with a solid example character followed by dotted outlines for tracing practice. Click again for a different arrangement.
- Download or Print. The PDF download includes sheets in both US Letter and A4 sizes. Use the Print button for a quick single-page printout.
You can share a specific sheet by copying the URL after generating. The link preserves your exact settings and seed, so anyone opening it sees the same tracing sheet.
About Tracing Sheets
Tracing is one of the most effective ways to build early handwriting skills. By following dotted outlines, children develop the fine motor control and muscle memory needed to write independently. The three-line guide system (top line, dashed midline, baseline) teaches proper letter proportions from the start.
Each line on the sheet begins with a solid example character, followed by several dotted copies for the child to trace. This "model then practice" approach lets children reference the correct form while they work. The dotted outlines are drawn with enough spacing between dashes to guide pencil movement without overwhelming young learners.
All sheets are generated entirely in your browser using deterministic algorithms. Nothing is uploaded or stored on any server.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this safe for kids?
Yes. This tool generates tracing outlines using only predefined letter paths and mathematical shapes. It does not use AI, does not load external content, and cannot produce inappropriate material. Every visual element is defined directly in code. Parents and teachers can use it with complete confidence.
What age is this designed for?
Tracing sheets are ideal for children ages 3 to 5. For children just learning to hold a pencil (ages 3-4), use 4 lines per page with Large letter size. For older preschoolers (ages 4-5), try 6 or 8 lines with Medium size to build more precise control. The shapes option is a great starting point for the youngest children.
Can I use these sheets in my classroom or sell them?
Yes. The tracing sheets you generate are yours to use however you like, including classroom handouts, tutoring materials, homeschool workbooks, or selling as printable products on Etsy or Amazon KDP. Each generation produces a unique arrangement.
What is included in the PDF download?
The download is a ZIP file containing PDFs in both US Letter and A4 sizes. Each PDF has the tracing sheet with guide lines, a solid example character on each row, and dotted outlines for tracing practice.
