- Choose a grid size. Pick a grid from the dropdown. Smaller grids (2x2, 2x3) are great for younger kids just learning to play. Larger grids (4x6, 6x6) challenge older children.
- Start the game. Click "New Game" to shuffle and deal the cards face-down on the board.
- Flip two cards. Tap or click any card to flip it over and reveal the icon underneath. Then flip a second card.
- Find matches. If the two cards show the same icon, they stay face-up. If they do not match, both cards flip back face-down after a short pause.
- Win the game. Keep flipping pairs until all cards are matched. Try to finish in as few moves as possible.
About Matching Pairs
Matching Pairs is one of the most popular memory games for children. It builds working memory, concentration, and visual recall. Kids learn to remember the positions of cards they have already seen, strengthening the same skills they need for reading, math, and everyday problem-solving.
This version uses icons drawn from a fixed sprite library: simple shapes, animals, and everyday objects. Every image is generated from a fixed library of hand-picked shapes and icons. No AI is used. The game runs entirely in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age is Matching Pairs suitable for?
The game is designed for children ages 3 through 8. The 2x2 and 2x3 grids are simple enough for three-year-olds, while the 4x6 and 6x6 grids provide a genuine challenge for older kids and even adults.
Is this safe for kids?
Yes. Every image is generated from a fixed library of hand-picked shapes and icons. No AI is used. The game cannot display anything outside this curated set of simple shapes, cartoon animals, and everyday objects. There are no external data feeds, no user-generated content, and no chat features. Parents and teachers can let children play with complete confidence.
Does the game work on phones and tablets?
Yes. The game board automatically resizes to fit your screen. Cards are large enough for small fingers to tap, and the layout adjusts whether you are playing on a phone, tablet, or desktop computer.
Can I play a new game with different icons?
Every time you click "New Game," the icons and their positions are randomized from the sprite library. You will get a different set of icons and a different arrangement each time, so the game never gets stale.
