How to Use Shape Sorting

  1. Choose a difficulty. Easy mode shows 3 shapes, Medium shows 5, and Hard shows 8. Start with Easy for younger children.
  2. Look at the shapes. At the top you will see colorful shapes: circles, stars, triangles, and more. At the bottom you will see gray dashed outlines of the same shapes, but in a different order.
  3. Drag and drop. Tap or click a shape at the top and drag it down to the matching outline. If you drop it on the correct outline, the shape snaps into place. If you drop it on the wrong outline, it returns to where it started.
  4. Sort them all. Keep dragging until every outline is filled. Then click "Next Puzzle" for a fresh set of shapes.

You can share a specific puzzle by copying the URL. The link preserves the difficulty and random seed so anyone opening it sees the same puzzle.

About Shape Sorting

Shape sorting is a foundational preschool activity that builds spatial awareness, fine motor control, and shape recognition. Children learn to match an object to its outline, training the same visual skills used for handwriting (forming letter shapes) and geometry (identifying forms).

This version uses icons drawn from a fixed sprite library of simple shapes, animals, and everyday objects. Every image is generated from hand-picked drawing functions. No AI is used. The game runs entirely in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored.

What age is Shape Sorting suitable for?

The game is designed for children ages 3 through 5. Easy mode with 3 shapes is simple enough for three-year-olds, while Hard mode with 8 shapes challenges older preschoolers and kindergartners.

Is this safe for kids?

Yes. Every image is generated from a fixed library of hand-picked shapes and icons. No AI is used. The game cannot display anything outside this curated set of simple shapes, cartoon animals, and everyday objects. There are no external data feeds, no user-generated content, and no chat features. Parents and teachers can let children play with complete confidence.

Can I print shape sorting worksheets?

Yes. Click "Print Worksheet" to open a printable version with colorful shapes to cut out and matching outlines to paste them onto. This makes a great hands-on activity for classrooms and home learning.
